The Bayelsa chapter of OhanezeNdigbo youth wing has donated food items to its indigenes affected by COVID-19 crisis in the state. The food items donated include bags of rice, beans, noodles, yams and some protective materials such as hand sanitizers among others.
Speaking during the presentation of the items in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital on Wednesday, the South-South coordinator of Ohaneze youth wing, Chief Chinedu Arthur-Ugwa, said the donation of food items is to alleviate the suffering of Igbo people in the state, especially those affected by government’s demolition of illegal structures in markets across the state.
He appreciated the Bayelsa State government for its earlier donation of some items to non-indigenes in the state, advising Igbo people to live in peace while doing their businesses.
He said: “We come together as a people to make sure that we alleviate the suffering of our people in this COVID-19 period. Most of our people have been at home in the past months due to this lockdown and they need our assistance in this trying time.
“Our members were worst hit during the ongoing demolition of ‘illegal structures’ in markets; their shops were demolished with goods inside, so they need our brotherly love now.
“I want to urge every Igbo person living and doing business in Bayelsa to be law abiding and support government developmental plans,” he said.
The chairman of Ohaneze youth wing in Bayelsa State, Sir Nnanna Raymond, said the welfare of its members has become paramount during the period of COVID-19 crisis.
He urged them to observe social distancing, wear face masks and maintain good healthy habits to stay safe and alive.
Over 100Igbo indigenes doing business in the state benefited from the palliative.
